What was the Haitian Revolution?

The Haitian Revolution was one inspired by the recent U.S. and French Revolutions and a very unique one for many reasons.

The Haitian Revolution began in 1791, the year the Bill of Rights was ratified in the US Constitution and in the midst of the French Revolution. The fact that it began as a slave rebellion created a very dynamic political and diplomatic situation for the new United States, a slave holding country itself. Often times, we can glean much information by using World Historical events as a mirror to understand our own country.
