English 114: Great Myths and Legends

A guide to resources for Professor Moore's Class

What is a Library Database?

Libraries have subscriptions to millions of articles contained in a 'database.'

These databases allow our students to access a wealth of credible information that may not be found on the open web. We pay for it so you don't have to!

The GWC Library has a variety of different databases for our students, including eBooks, streaming videos, as well as journal, magazine, and newspaper article databases.

Sharing Library Database Resources in Canvas

Tip!When saving articles or sharing with others, you will need to use the permanent or persistent links, also known as permalinks or bookmarks.

Please note: DO NOT use the URL at the top of your web browser OR the link in the citation as they may not work.

These library databases use different terms, but each of them has a way to get a shareable, remote access link to the resources. Look around the page for terms such as:

  • Permanent link
  • Get Link
  • Bookmark
  • OR see if the URL/web address starts with or includes GWC.

Scholarly Databases

Use these databases to find scholarly sources for literary research and background information about your topics.

Attention BOOK CLUB RESEARCHERS!

Search using the title, character(s), or ideas themes you are going to summarize for your section of the Book Club. Remember to search using the different versions or spelling of names and/or titles!

Not finding enough?

Try using synonyms.

Put phrases in quotes when searching. For example: "rose red" will find those words in that order. Try it!

Journals

The library subscribes to many scholarly journals devoted to scholarship about folklore and fairy tales, and a small sampling of these is listed below.

The online databases will allow you to search through the contents of these journals (and many others), but browsing through an individual journal also gives you the opportunity for more specific topic research.  Click on any of the links below and "search within that publication" for relevant articles.
