Open Educational Resources (OER)

A guide to OER at GWC.

What is this and why is it important?

Your professors may be using Open Educational Resources for your classes.

This means that they have chosen to locate free or low-cost materials instead of more expensive textbooks for their teaching.

  • You may or may not locate them in the GWC Bookstore.
  • If you do not want a digital book, the bookstore may have a low-cost print version.
  • You are able to print/copy the materials (or any part of them) on your own.
  • Check the Syllabus for your course to see if the instructor has included a description and a link to the materials they want you to use.

A Guide to OER Textbooks for Students

If you have been assigned OER Textbook(s), here is a guide to using them:

Students:

The textbook linked here is published in Pressbooks and is useful for understanding how to read on that platform. Also, there is guidance for using OpenSTAX and LibreTexts, which are other book publishing platforms that your professors may use.

Professors:

Use the relevant links here in your Canvas course to help students navigate the books you are using in your course.

How do I find classes with zero cost textbooks?

Video from our sister college, Coastline!

Librarian Elizabeth describes how to find OER in the Coastline Schedule (same as GWC and OCC).
