Information on permitted uses of library resources

Purpose:

This guide provides information on how specific database licenses allow us to use their content. The license may be per vendor or per product. If you have a question about permitted uses, please contact Alana Krause, Distance Education Librarian.

Linking eBook Resources in Canvas

Looking to supplement course content with library eBooks?

Library resources are ZTC (zero textbook cost) compliant when used appropriately.

eBooks that are unlimited may be instantly used as course readings in Canvas.

  • Accepted: All Gale and Salem eBooks are unlimited and may be linked to in Canvas as required reading materials. 
  • Partial: Not all eBooks in EBSCO eBook Collection or ProQuest eBook Central are unlimited.
    • Working on making your course ZTC? Contact us about purchasing additional eBooks to meet course demands, where possible.

Linking Article Resources in Canvas

Provide links with remote access to articles (and eBooks!) by using Permalinks/Bookmarks/Permanent URLs.

  • For copyright/licensing and library use statistics purposes, it is advisable to link resources.
  • Students may download PDFs.

Instructions:

Streaming Video: Films on Demand

Instructional Content:

Videos from Films on Demand may be directly linked or embedded in Canvas or any password-protected website that is restricted to GWC students currently enrolled in a specific class. Professors may also show videos in the classroom during scheduled class times. You may not link videos on any public-facing site without a password.

Public Performance: 

Our license includes some public performance rights. This means that student clubs, film festivals, or any event that falls outside regular curriculum-based instruction may show films from this collection, as long as they do not charge an attendance fee and the events on held on campus as a college activity. 

Streaming Video: Swank Digital Campus

Instructional Content: 

Videos from Swank may be directly linked in Canvas or any password-protected website that is restricted to GWC students currently enrolled in a specific class. Professors may also show videos in the classroom during scheduled class times.

You may not link videos on any public-facing site without a password.

Public Performance: 

Our license does NOT include public performance rights. Only classroom viewing rights are permitted. This means that student clubs, film festivals, or any event that falls outside regular curriculum-based instruction may not show films from this collection without permission being obtained in advance.
