Library Services for Faculty

Instructions, tips and help for faculty using GWC Library resources and services.

How can faculty use library resources in Canvas?

Library subscription databases are licensed for your use in Canvas.

Best practice is to link to materials rather than downloading and uploading the PDF or text. This practice helps faculty to comply with copyright.

  • Embedding articles, books, and similar materials require that you find and use the 'permalinks' or permanent links to them (not the URL at the top of your browser).
  • Embedding videos from our streaming databases are just as easy as a YouTube video or Ted Talk.
  • Embedding Library Research Guides in your course will help your students focus in on library content relevant to your assignments.

See the instructions for embedding library resources in Canvas by clicking "Next:" below or using the menu on this page.

Using Online Materials in Your Class

You may use all online materials from GWC's library in your class, under the following guidelines:

  • You must post any library content for your class behind a password. Posting in Canvas is absolutely fine, but you may not post it on an open website that does not require a login. This includes faculty websites.
  • Best practice is to link directly to the materials instead of downloading them and then re-uploading them into Canvas. This is for accessibility/ADA and copyright reasons.
  • You can embed videos from any GWC library source directly into Canvas. If you need help doing this, please contact Alana Krause.
  • Our streaming videos are licensed for classroom use, so you may show them freely. They are typically close-captioned. If you find a video without captions in our online collection, please let Alana Krause know so the video can be captioned.
  • If you need assistance finding or using materials, librarians can help!

Library Databases

The Golden West College Library subscribes to over 50 different databases.

  • Their content includes full-text journal, magazine and newspaper articles, radio transcripts, eBooks, full-length streaming videos and more.
  • These resources may be accessed 24/7 both on and off campus (use your Coast/MyGWC log in when prompted).
  • Click on the drop-down menu below to see an alphabetical list or click "View more results" to view the A to Z Database page that allows you to sort by subject, type, and vendor.
